Earwax (also known as cerumen) is a normal secretion in the ear. Firstly it protects the skin of the ear canal, assists in cleaning and lubrication. Secondly it provides some protection against bacteria, fungi, dust and water.

The ear canal has its own self cleansing mechanism. The skin lining the ear canal naturally migrates from the centre of the ear drum to the outer ear. As a result the wax moves along with it, together with any debris it has collected.

How much wax we produce depends on things like:
